Pâté – advantage and disadvantage to our health

Pâté food is popular side dish in menu from different areas especially in the west. Pâté could be made from ground meat or some animal livers (as pork’, beef’, goose, chicken…) and minced fat. Some other ingredients as vegetables, herbs, spices and wine (or brandy) are also added. This dish is served both cold and hot with breads, hamburgers, steak…and also added to other dishes.

There are varieties types of pâté food which flavor and preparation depend on the areas and cultures but the most famous one is possibly from France and Belgium.

Pâté food is same with many types of meat products, it contains number of nutrients, from minerals as iron, copper, selenium, riboflavin, phosphorus, potassium…, to vitamins as A, B12, C…, fatty acid as omega 3 and omega 6, a small amount of protein, fats, cholesterol, sodium…

Although is used widely, but like any other foods, pâté has benefits and also unhealthy parts to our health. Let find out what they are.

Advantages of consuming pâté

As mentioned above, pâté food is a source of minerals and some vitamins which are helpful to our health.

These nutrients in 28-30g pâté (about 1 ounce) serving especially iron and copper (which could motivate the good enzymes in order to help our brain and body work more efficient), selenium and riboflavin (which are helpful to the immune) could meet our body daily value from 13%-19%.

The vitamin A and B (which useful for the immune and could support the work of nervous system) from the same serving amount also provide 31%-38% our body daily value.

In daily consuming, pâté is considered convenient for its quick and easy use. It could be served either hot or cold and make our meal to become more flavor.

Disadvantages of using pâté

For produce mostly from ground meat or liver and minced fat, pâté food contains high level of fat and cholesterol.

In 28-30g pâté food (about 1 ounce), there will be about 72mg of cholesterol (about 24% of the daily limit as usual, and about 36% of daily limit for whom who in high cholesterol or heart disease).

The fat level in the same pâté amount above is about 8g total. Among this, 2.7-3g is saturated fat (about 12-13% of daily limit as usual and about 17-18% of daily limit for whom who in high cholesterol or heart disease).

Those numbers mean that if we over consuming this type of food, we could be threaten by the heart attack risk for the increasing if cholesterol level in our blood.

Besides, if we produce and store this processed meat in wrong way, we could get high risk of poisoning.
